Calvin Trice over at the Staunton NewsLeader reports that the BOS did decide not to raise the Real Estate tax rate to help cover the budget short fall. Instead they decided to raise the Property tax rate instead on a smaller tax base by raising the rate by $.25 per $100...
Just can't wait to get that bill in the mail...
VERONA — Augusta County residents will pay more tax on their
cars, trucks and motorcycles — but not on their houses and real estate.
A divided Board of Supervisors chose to keep the real estate
rate at 48 cents per $100 of assessed value, among the lowest rates in the
state.
Riverheads Supervisor Michael Shull joined Beverley Manor Supervisor David Karaffa, Chairman Tracy Pyles, of Pastures, and North River Supervisor Marshall Pattie to oppose an increase on the tax rate for homes.
This fall, county residents will get a bill for their car
tax that will reflect a rate increase from $2.25 per $100 of assessed value to
$2.50 per $100. That increase passed on a 4-3 vote, with Pyles, Pattie and
Shull voting against it.
That bill is typically due Dec. 5.
The higher car tax rate will bring in another $1 million to
county coffers for the budget year that will start July 1.
Supervisors adopted a local budget for the coming fiscal year of about $74.7 million.
Just went over to the NewsVirginian to read and include Bob Stuarts coverage of this meeting and tax hike and I was informed that I have reached my monthly allowance of free visits....
ReplyDeleteNot sure if I want to pay the whatever $$$ for this monthly service and question if smaller papers like this are worth the cost...
I like swacgirl's blog article on May 3rd, in which she says that those against the tax increase are uneducated and not smart enough to understand the county budget process.
ReplyDeleteDr. Mike is a school teacher over at the governors school and it was his house that was in danger when there was no coverage over at the Yancy fire house. She continues to take marching orders from him and has no problem with the rest of us footing the bill......
ReplyDeleteKaraffa and the SWACster act like this is the first Board that has ever had to deal with unfunded mandates and cut budgets from Richmond. They remind me of our failed President blaming Bush for every ill under the Sun- how long will they continue to blame the last assessment for having to make tough political decisions?
ReplyDeleteAnd now Shrewsberry proposes to increase the power of her staff at the expense of local business. Talk about a tin ear. At a time when we need to do every thing we can to stay out of the way of the productive among us, Shrewsberry wishes to extract even more tax. Maybe she could come from behind her desk and pitch in. These constitutional officers have some of the cushiest jobs around with obscene salaries to boot. Its so bad, even Karaffa opposes it, even though the SWACster implicity endorses it (through her support of the school budget).
